FORT WORTH ( CBSDFW.COM) – Fort Worth Police Chief Jeff Halstead announced he will retire after almost 6 years at the helm of the department.

“I had absolutely no idea that that first year would be so challenging,” Chief Halstead told city leaders at a Pre-Council meeting Tuesday afternoon.

During Halstead’s tenure, the crime rate dropped in Fort Worth. He credited his employees and community during the meeting for the city’s crime reductions.

“Your community in Fort Worth is the most supportive of law enforcement that I’ve ever seen,” said Halstead.

Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price in turn credited Halstead with lowering neighborhood and gang crime, pushing the department forward in technology and “making community policing a priority.” She congratulated Halstead on his retirement, calling his decision “a major loss.”

“As chief you’ve been no stranger to adversity. Nobody has handled it better than you,” said Mayor Price. “You should be very proud of your legacy.”

During Tuesday’s meeting, Chief Halstead also cleared the air about alleged ‘bad blood’ between him and Mayor Price.

“I do want to clear one thing for the record. To this day, we have one feud – she’s a road biker and I’m a mountain biker,” he said.

Halstead and his wife Kim will continue to live in Fort Worth.

He will retire effective Jan. 9.
